The Trust has finalised its acquisition of this important, long empty property at the corner of St Nicholas Street and Silent Street. The building was last used as an antiques business, and an adjacent cafe and sweet shop.

The restoration project is being carried out with grant aid from English Heritage and Ipswich Borough Council. Loan facilities are provided by the Architectural Heritage Fund.

The property was regraded to II* to reflect the recognition of its historic and architectural value. An historical architectural survey of the building was commissioned from Leigh Alston, a specialist in this field, who has kindly given us permission to publish an edited version on this site.

Trust member Dr Charles Tracy carried out further historical research, and these complementary reports clearly established the importance of the premises.

One of the main problems with this project has been the need to deal with a very large medieval chimney stack which has been in great danger of collapsing into the cellar.

The premises include interesting vaulted cellars which are likely to be utilised for storage purposes ancillary to the retail use
